2017 Bichi No Sapiens | Mystery Grape | Baja, Mexico

Don’t ask what the grape is in Bichi No Sapiens because even the winemaker doesn’t know. This bold, rustic red wine is made from an unidentified varietal found in a 69 year old vineyard on the Baja Peninsula of Mexico, an area where the vast majority of Mexico’s wines are produced. Vines were planted here by the Spanish conquistadors back in the 1500s. After the wines of the area become popular, the conquistadors ordered a halt to production due to a fear they would outpace the sale of wines from Spain. Only Spanish missionaries saved the vines from destruction by refusing to cooperate, paving the way for the wines of Bichi
